Aussiepom

Aussiepom

INTRODUCTION

The Aussiepom is a mixed breed dog, a cross between the Australian Shepherd and Pomeranian dog breeds. Affectionate, fun-loving and nothing short of adorable, these puppies have inherited some of the best traits from their parents. Aussiepoms tend to be called just that, Aussiepoms, sometimes spelled “Aussie Pom” or “Aussi Pom.” Despite their unfortunate status as a designer breed, you can find these mixed-breed dogs in shelters and rescues, so remember to adopt. While these mixed-breed dogs may be small and cuddly, their energy is anything but. As a relatively new mixed breed with very different parents, the temperament of these dogs can vary greatly. They make great companions for people or households with older children. If you want a dog that likes to play and keep you on your toes, the Aussiepom may be the dog for you.

HIGHLIGHTS

Aussiepoms are mixed breed dogs. They are not pure breeds like their Australian Shepherd or Pomeranian parents. The main colors of the Aussiepoms are red merle, blue merle, tricolor, and sometimes they can have a solid coat with small markings here and there. The Aussiepom may not be an ideal dog for allergy sufferers due to the length of its coat. However, their thick, fluffy coat also protects them from hot or cold climates. Aussiepoms get along very well with all members of the family, although they are small and can be easily injured by over-excited children. Make sure all children learn to handle the dogs gently before introducing them or conducting play sessions. Aussiepoms have a lot of energy and need lots of exercise and playtime.

HISTORY

The Aussiepom dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeds began intentionally mixing Australian Shepherds and Pomeranians in the 2000s, probably in North America. Aussiepoms were probably bred to capture the positive traits of both the Australian Shepherd and the Pomeranian. The popularity of the Aussiepom has increased due to its looks and high intelligence. Crossbreeding also helps to reduce the risk of diseases specific to certain purebreds. Although the Aussiepom began as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check local shelters, look for Aussiepom rescues, or check with breed-specific Australian Shepherd or Pomeranian rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed-breed dogs and find homes for them.
