Russian Blues are intelligent, affectionate and loyal cats, although they retain their independent streak. Learn more about this playful and beautiful breed. Russian Blues are known for their thick, gorgeous blue-grey coat and bright eyes. These cats are sweet, loyal and cautious animals who love to have a routine.
Their affectionate temperament, independent streak and low grooming requirements make the Russian Blue a great family pet. If you have the patience to socialise this shy kitten, you will get an affectionate family member who is totally devoted to you.
The Russian blue is a fairly common breed, and kittens from a reputable breeder usually cost between $400 and $600. Russian Blues are medium-sized cats with a short, dense, plush coat that sticks out from their body and makes them appear larger than they really are. Their soft, silky coat is a dark grey with silver tips. Because these cats shed little and have lower levels of known feline allergens, some pet owners consider them “”hypoallergenic””. “These cats produce very low levels of Fel d 1 glycoprotein, which is the protein in cats that creates allergies in people,” says Natalie L. Marks, DVM, CVJ, a veterinarian at Blum Animal Hospital in Chicago.
So while there is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic cat, some breeds, such as the Russian blue, may be more suitable for some allergy sufferers. Before bringing home a Russian blue kitten, spend time with the breed to see how its allergies react.
One of the most interesting aspects of a Russian blue’s appearance is its eyes, which change shade from yellow to green over time. Like all kittens, Russian Blues are born with blue eyes. The blue fades to a light yellow or gold, then becomes yellow with a green ring at around four months of age, and finally becomes completely bright green in adulthood.
These cats usually weigh between 7 and 12 pounds and stand about 10 inches tall. “
