The Pixie-bob, a large, muscular cat, is rumoured to have originated from a meeting between a domestic shorthair and a bobcat. The breed resembles its wild cousins, but DNA tests show it to be a fully domestic cat with a sweet, affable personality and a dog-like loyalty to its family units.
Pixie-bobs enjoy learning tricks and playing games such as fetch. They are always willing to eat once or twice, at any time. Like breeds such as the Bombay, toyger or ocicat, Pixie-bobs can feel like wild cats in some respects, but without any unnecessary risk to their owners. The Pixie-bob resembles its supposed wild namesakes. Most Pixie-bobs have black fur and fur on the underside of the legs, as well as black fur on the chin, lips and around the eyes. The chin and eyes are usually topped with white fur. Their heads are pear-shaped, with medium-sized ears, covered with abundant hair.
The coat of these cats may be short or long, but always has a double coat of thick, woolly hair which may be harsh to the touch. The coat is brindle in a pattern resembling that of the North American bobcat, but can be of various colours, the most common being fawn, orange or light grey.
The tail of Pixie-bobs may be non-existent, although a 2 to 4 inch tail is required for show cats. Occasionally, Pixie-bobs are presented with regular tails, which are not considered a show defect. Pixie-bobs are also polydactyl, usually with five toes per front foot and four on the hind, although six- and seven-toed varieties exist.
Both males and females can grow to between 30 and 30 centimetres, although larger males have occasionally been seen. Pixie-bobs are very thick and muscular cats, and although 14 pounds is the usual maximum size for a male, males up to 25 pounds have been recorded. “
