HISTORY

The mixed Morkie dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders began intentionally mixing Maltese and Yorkshire Terriers in the late 1990s, probably in North America. Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to create a friendly, affectionate lap dog with little shedding. Although the Morkie breed began as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. If you decide this is the breed for you, consider adoption. Check your local shelters, Morkie rescue groups, or breed-specific Maltese or Yorkshire Terrier rescue groups, as they sometimes take in mixed-breed dogs and find homes for them.
