Hanoverian Scenthound

The Hanoverian Scenthound is a hunting dog originating in Germany. They are loyal, independent and calm puppies that have some of the best qualities of most dog breeds in existence today. The Hanoverian Scenthound goes by several other names, including Hanoverian Hound, Hanoverian Scent Dog and Hannoverscher Schweisshund. Despite their status as a rare dog breed, you can still try to find these beautiful puppies at shelters or breed-specific rescues, so remember to adopt. These adorable puppies are quite large, so they are not ideal for city dwellers living in flats. They are more suited to larger homes with some sort of yard for them to run around in. If you want a quiet, independent dog that will never leave your side and will always try to please you, this dog is perfect for you!

The main colours of the Hanoverian Hound are light to dark deer red, more or less intense, with or without mask. Because it is a short haired dog, it may be suitable for allergy sufferers. They are fairly easy to groom and a good brushing a week will suffice.Hanoverian Scenthounds are calm and loyal dogs who love the company of children. Play between dogs and children should always be supervised. Make sure your dog gets at least one good walk of half an hour to an hour’s duration a day, with some good active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in.Hanoverian Scenthounds are not naturally fond of other animals and may prefer to be the only pet in the house.

The origins of the Hanoverian Hound go back to medieval times, around 1600, in Germany. At that time, their ancestors, the Liam Hounds, were large dogs used for hunting and tracking prey. Thus, Schweisshunds, or hounds, were bred. If the game was wounded but escaped the hunters, the hounds would set off to find it. The Hanover Hound was developed from Liam’s hounds by gamekeepers in the 19th century in the city of Hanover, hence the name. A breed club called Verein Hirschmann e.V. has been caring for and preserving the breed since 1894. Since then, these dogs have been bred strictly with their working abilities in mind. Hanoverian hounds are used almost exclusively by specialists in tracking and big game hunting.
