Emergency in Florida

Florida emergency: manatees are dying

In Florida there is a massacre of mistresses: according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 674 dead specimens were found on the beaches from January 1 to mid-April, a number four times higher than in previous years. Causes include exposure to neurotoxins produced by algae bloom caused by the use of fertilizers and injuries caused by collisions with boats.

Florida is facing an anomalous and seemingly unstoppable death of manatees (Trichechus manatus). Despite the efforts made by the experts of the associations that protect these marine mammals, deaths are increasingly numerous, even quadrupled compared to previous years. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, 674 dead specimens were found on the beaches from January 1 to mid-April. In all of 2019 there were “only” about 600.

Among the possible causes of death are the exposure to neurotoxins produced by the exceptional blooms of algae, caused by the excessive use of fertilizers, and the injuries caused by the increasingly numerous collisions with propellers and tourist boats, which very often whizzing on the waters. regardless of the risks to the fauna.

Associations, veterinarians and experts are working hard to deal with this emergency, trying to save as many manatees as possible. However, the clinics and recovery centers are increasingly crowded and unfortunately not everyone can be saved. It will be essential to prevent other Florida manatees from becoming victims of boat accidents by raising awareness among tourists, but also to intervene to reduce the use of fertilizers and the loss of food and habitat, for a species already considered Vulnerable in the IUCN Red List.

Furthermore, the excessive algal bloom due to the massive use of fertilizers would also seem to damage marine aquatic plants, the main food source of these quiet and sly aquatic herbivores. The excessive layer of algae, in fact, does not allow sunlight to reach the seabed, causing most of the vegetation to die. It will be up to act quickly, one of the most famous symbols of Florida is now really in danger of being compromised forever.
