The Egyptian mau is a breed that stirs the imagination with its bright mottled coat and magnificent gooseberry green eyes. Like the ocicat, the Egyptian mau is noted for its mottled coat. However, unlike the ocicat, the mau was not created by a breeder. Instead, the Egyptian mau acquired its markings naturally.
These long, lean and muscular cats have a true athletic build. Their hind legs are slightly longer than their front legs, giving them the appearance of standing on tiptoe. These long hind legs, along with an extra flap of skin running from the flank to the hind knees, make them incredible jumpers and the fastest of the domestic cat breeds.
Instead of the traditional tabby markings, the mau is endowed with these famous markings, as well as a dark dorsal stripe running from the top of the head to the tip of the tail. The mau’s coat is available in six colours: silver, bronze, smoke, black, caramel and blue/bronze, the last three being the rarest. Their heads are slightly oblong and traditionally feature a “beetle” mark on the forehead or an “M” shape, the latter being more common among North American maus. Their ears are broad and set wide apart, and their slightly almond-shaped eyes are a stunning bright green.
