Details

The domestic shorthair cat vies to be the most popular pet in the US, with some 80 million in the United States out of an estimated 600 million worldwide. In fact, the vast majority, almost 95%, of American cats are considered domestic shorthairs.
It should be noted that the domestic shorthair cat is not really a breed. Known as “moggies” to the English, the cats are of mixed ancestry and may be more akin to the “mutts” of the canine world than to their own unique breed. Because domestic shorthair cats are a combination of different breeds, they vary greatly in coat colour, personality and other traits, which means that adopting a domestic shorthair as your own is easy.
These cuddly, playful cats are easy to love and are ideal for a wide variety of homes and lifestyles. The personalities of domestic shorthair cats are very varied. From playful to calm or vocal to quiet, no matter the personality, these cats are sociable when raised with humans and make excellent pets for most families, including those with other pets or children.
Although they are descendants of cats that used to chase mice, all cats are individuals and that means that not all domestic shorthair cats will want to chase mice or want to bring their parents “treats”.
Domestic shorthair cats are known to be excellent at acrobatics such as jumping and balancing. This is evidenced by their often playful nature. Having a safe place for these cats to watch the birds while guarding the home will keep these cats satisfied and mentally stimulated for hours.
Domestic shorthair cats can be energetic and will probably welcome so many opportunities to keep their minds and bodies active. Scratching posts, feather toys and the classic cardboard box can quickly become favourites for these cats and provide plenty of mental and physical exercise.
Typically relaxed and easygoing, these cats enjoy basking in the sun and, like many other cats, will enjoy an afternoon nap anywhere, including your lap. Head scratches are a must for domestic shorthairs, who are very affectionate, and cat parents would do well to schedule at least 15 minutes of playtime each day with them.”
