With its long, slender, delicate-looking body, big eyes and huge ears, the Cornish rex is a cat that is sure to get people talking. But its most striking calling card is its coat. The Cornish rex lacks the long hair of the outer coat, so it has only a soft, curly undercoat. The body of the Cornish rex is extremely thin, which gives these cats the appearance of being fragile. This is all a ruse, as all that lies beneath the skin is muscle and hard bone, making them surprisingly robust cats that often weigh considerably more than they look. Their body is topped by a small, egg-shaped head with high cheekbones, large round eyes, a long nose and giant ears set high on the skull. They have been compared to whippets or greyhounds because of their athletic build and quick movements. The breed also has a tendency to arch its back when walking, similar to these breeds of dogs.
The main distinguishing feature of the Cornish rex is its coat. In fact, it is the characteristic that makes the breed. While most breeds have three different types of coat – the long, outer guard hairs, a middle layer of fawn hair and the down undercoat – Cornish rex cats have only the third, which gives them a soft, wavy appearance.
The down coat of the Cornish rex is incredibly soft and is described by its owners as being completely different from anything else.
