Catahoula Bulldog

INTRODUCTION

The Catahoula Bulldog is a mongrel dog, a cross between the Catahoula Leopard Dog and American Bulldog breeds. Agile, energetic and loyal, these puppies inherit some of the best qualities of their two parents. Catahoula Bulldogs are also known as American Mastahoulas. You can find these mixed breed dogs at breed-specific shelters and rescues, so remember to always adopt. When you live with a Catahoula Bulldog, you will find that they are exceptionally energetic dogs with a great deal of intelligence, so you will need to make sure that you can provide the mixed breed with almost constant attention and exercise. They are also very loyal and protective: intruders will trigger the alert dog’s guarding instincts.

HIGHLIGHTS

Catahoula Bulldogs are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their parents Catahoula Leopard Dog or American Bulldog. Catahoula Bulldogs come in a range of colors. They can be totally white or totally dark, or they can come in a mix that also includes gray and brown. These dogs have a short, dense, smooth coat that is often described as shiny. Weekly brushings are sufficient for this breed. Shedding is also very low. Catahoula Bulldogs are some of the most loyal dogs around. They can act as guardians and protectors of young children, although when dealing with such a powerful dog, it is imperative that the breed is trained and socialized properly from a very young age. It will need to be able to commit to at least two long walks each day, ideally with the option of swimming or running. It is not a dog that adapts well to apartment living, and could have destructive behavior due to boredom and restlessness.

HISTORY

The Catahoula Bulldog is not one of the newest mixed breeds in existence. Common estimates suggest they have been on the scene for approximately 100 years. The breed has a history of being a very popular dog in the southern states of the USA, mainly due to its ability to hunt and trap bear and hogs and herd livestock. Delving deeper into the dog’s heritage, the Catahoula part of its name comes from a Native American word meaning “clear water. “The Catahoula Bulldog has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. So consider contacting local rescue groups and shelters if you are thinking of adding the Catahoula Bulldog to your home.
